Wondering how to learn a new language? Save yourself some money by making the most of your mobile devices, and you’ll be saying hola, bonjour, hallo and ni hao in no time.

Start with the basics

A great introduction to learning a new language is through simple translation. Google Translate™ translation service is a wonderful app to help you decipher more than 70 languages. Use your voice, handwriting and even camera and hear your translation spoken aloud, or get it in writing. You can even access a dictionary for single words or simple phrases to help you get accustomed to the look and sounds of a new language.

Explore with your device

There are plenty of multilingual-compatible smartphones and tablets. Try changing your language settings to the one you’re studying. You’ll get used to seeing common words while gradually immersing yourself in the language daily—no passport needed. Some devices take it a step further, and one of the great features of the Samsung Galaxy S® 4 is the S Translator, which translates spoken words or written text into nine different languages.

Study vocabulary

Next, you have to build your vocabulary. A good place to start is by using the app Babbel. It boasts over 2,000 vocabulary words per language, and the speech recognition and review manager help make those words stick. Another great app to check out is Duolingo, and while the only languages you’ll find here are Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and English, it’s the one of the most comprehensive and free language-learning apps out there. You won’t have to suffer through ads as you sift through images, vocabulary and pronunciations of new foreign words.

Engage in conversation

Once you’ve mastered your vocab, it’s time to move to something more in depth. Check out Busuu, an app that incorporates a social aspect so you can converse online with actual native-speaking people. Talking to native speakers is a great way to develop your conversational and practical language skills. Busuu will even send you reminders when it’s been a while since you’ve worked on your studies.
Use these tools to help you learn any language with your mobile devices. You’ll impress yourself with how much you can learn, not to mention acquire some serious rights de orgullo!
